Career Coaching for Jaq - part 1

This is the journey of Jaq, a client of mine. This is NOT her real name to protect her identity.

Jaq is a management trainee in an off-shore bank. She engaged me to be her coach for career progression.

The first challenge was about Jaq feeling very stressed and upset because the project under her management is running behind schedule and its completion would potentially be delayed.

Jaq felt stressed because the action items were supposed to be performed by a colleague from another team and this colleague was unresponsive and did not prioritise his tasks.

Jaq felt upset because she lost control of the project and may lose her year end bonus as a result.

After a few fruitful coaching sessions, Jaq learned that she can follow an evaluation procedure, where she could account for the delays to the project to the non-performing colleague, and this help Jaq manage the colleague better.

When Jaq regained the perceived 'control' over the project, she was no longer upset.

Jaq knew what she could do all along. Coaching helped her trust herself, analyse the situation and take actions. On this journey, Jaq simply repeated the cycle of "doing", "evaluating the result" and "re-strategising", and "doing...", constantly moving towards her goal.

Changing perception of situation will change how we feel about it.
